Burundi

The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) chose Ézéchiel Nibigira, Burundi’s former Foreign Minister, as its new president on September 7, 2025, .

Appointed at a summit in Equatorial Guinea, he succeeds Angola’s Gilberto Verissimo for a five-year term.

Nibigira’s Background

Nibigira, a key figure in Burundi’s ruling CNDD-FDD party, holds a doctorate in business administration and finance.

He currently serves as a member of parliament and has held roles as Burundi’s ambassador to Kenya and Minister for the East African Community. His experience positions him to lead ECCAS, but tough challenges lie ahead.

Regional Challenges

The ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a top priority.

Burundi, an ally of the DRC, faces strained relations with Rwanda, which supports the M23 rebel group fighting DRC forces. Rwanda recently left ECCAS, accusing it of favoring Kinshasa. Nibigira must navigate these tensions to restore peace.

Reforming ECCAS

Nibigira also faces the task of reforming ECCAS, which has been criticized for poor management. Founded in 1983, the 10-member bloc aims to promote peace, security, and economic integration in Central Africa. Strengthening the organization’s credibility will be key to his leadership.

What’s Next?

Nibigira’s presidency comes at a critical time. By addressing the DRC conflict and pushing reforms, he could help ECCAS foster stability and growth in the region.
