Tunisia

Tunisia has punched its ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, thanks to a thrilling last-gasp goal by Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane against Equatorial Guinea.

Tunisia’s Dramatic Victory

On September 8, 2025, Ben Romdhane, assisted by substitute Firas Chaouat, scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to secure a 1-0 victory in Malabo. The goal sparked wild celebrations among Tunisian players and fans.

The win ensures Tunisia’s place at the tournament with two games to spare, leading Group H with 22 points from eight matches, 10 points ahead of second-placed Namibia, who have one game in hand.

Remarkably, Tunisia has not conceded a single goal in qualifying. This marks their seventh World Cup appearance and third consecutive qualification, following group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022.

Other Group H Action

In another Group H match, Malawi staged a comeback from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Liberia. Gabadinho Mhango and Chawanangwa Kaonga scored in the 72nd and 80th minutes, respectively, to salvage a point.

Group G Updates

Algeria remains atop Group G with 19 points after a 0-0 draw against Guinea. Uganda kept pace, defeating Somalia 2-0 to reach 16 points, level with Mozambique, who also won 2-0 against Botswana. Algeria needs just three more points to secure qualification, with upcoming matches against Somalia and Uganda.

Group I and Beyond

In Group I, Madagascar earned a 3-1 victory over Chad, climbing to 16 points and second place behind Ghana, who strengthened their lead with a 1-0 win over Mali in Accra.

Morocco, already qualified, continued their perfect run in Group E with a 2-0 win over Zambia, marking seven victories in seven matches.

Elsewhere, Guinea-Bissau defeated Djibouti 2-0, while Libya’s 2-0 win over Eswatini in Group D brought them to 14 points, two behind leaders Cape Verde, who have a game in hand.

Looking Ahead

With Tunisia and Morocco confirmed for the 2026 World Cup, Africa’s qualification race intensifies. Up to nine African nations could qualify for the expanded 48-team tournament, with Algeria and others in strong contention. Fans eagerly await more thrilling moments as the qualifiers unfold.
