On September 9, 2025, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Pretoria, with a chance to secure Group C’s automatic qualification spot.

High-Stakes Match

FIFA announced that South Africa, leading Group C with 16 points, can clinch qualification with a victory over Nigeria (10 points) if Benin (11 points) fail to beat Lesotho.

A win would solidify South Africa’s lead, while Nigeria face a must-win to keep their World Cup hopes alive after a 1-0 victory over Rwanda. The reverse fixture in 2024 ended in a 1-1 draw.

Ineligible Player Dispute

South Africa’s position is clouded by a protest from Lesotho, who demand a 3-0 result and three-point deduction for South Africa’s 2-0 win in March 2025.

The issue stems from midfielder Teboho Mokoena playing despite a two-yellow-card suspension. FIFA has yet to rule, leaving Group C’s standings uncertain. A sanction could shift the balance, boosting Nigeria and Benin’s chances.

Group C Dynamics

  • South Africa: 16 points (+8 GD)
  • Benin: 11 points (0 GD)
  • Nigeria: 10 points (+2 GD)
  • Lesotho, Rwanda, Zimbabwe: Trailing with 6–8 points

Only the group winner qualifies directly, with the runner-up eligible for a playoff. South Africa’s recent 3-0 win over Lesotho strengthens their position, but Nigeria’s resilience makes this clash critical.

What’s at Stake

A South African victory, paired with a Lesotho win or draw against Benin, could secure their first World Cup appearance since 2010.

For Nigeria, a loss could end their automatic qualification hopes unless South Africa faces penalties. Fans are tense, with social media buzzing over the match’s implications.

Looking Ahead

The outcome in Pretoria, combined with FIFA’s pending decision on Mokoena’s eligibility, will shape Group C’s final standings.

Both teams are set to fight fiercely in this do-or-die encounter, with Africa’s football community watching closely.
