Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen suffered an ankle sprain while representing the Super Eagles in their 1-0 victory over Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.

The injury occurred midway through the first half in Uyo, following a challenge from Rwanda’s Claude Niyomugabo.

Osimhen was substituted early, and initial assessments by the Super Eagles medical team suggested only a shin bruise. Super Eagles Media Officer Promise Efoghe stated:

“Team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his shin. He woke up this morning (Sunday) with discomfort and will not be travelling with the squad to South Africa for Tuesday’s game.”

Galatasaray’s Confirmation

After returning to Turkey, Galatasaray conducted further tests on their star forward. Team doctor Dr. Yener Slim announced the diagnosis on Tuesday via the club’s website.

“In the examinations conducted today on our football A team player Victor Osimhen in our hospital, a moderate level of sprain (tension and bleeding) was detected in the ankle ligaments and the necessary treatment was started to return to the field as soon as possible,” Slim said.

The injury rules Osimhen out of Nigeria’s crucial match against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Impact on the Game and Team

Osimhen was replaced by Cyriel Dessers, the Belgium-born forward, who struggled to replicate the Nigerian’s threat against Rwanda. However, second-half substitute Tolu Arokodare scored in the 51st minute, securing the win and keeping Nigeria’s World Cup hopes alive.

Osimhen’s Season So Far

Osimhen joined Galatasaray permanently from Napoli this summer in a €75 million deal, following a successful loan spell last season. He has netted two goals in three league appearances, helping his team lead the Süper Lig with 12 points.

It remains uncertain if Osimhen will recover in time for Galatasaray’s league clash against Eyüpspor on Saturday. The club is prioritizing his swift return to action.

Broader Context

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has condemned the ‘unfair’ scapegoating of Super Eagles players amid recent performances. Osimhen’s injury adds to the challenges for both club and country as they navigate a demanding schedule.
