NFF Rejects Criticism of Super Eagles Players

Super Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rejected a statement that criticized Super Eagles players Cyriel Dessers and William Troost-Ekong after a 1-1 draw against South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The statement, linked to NFF Communications Director Ademola Olajire, called Dessers sluggish and blamed Ekong for an own goal that gave South Africa the lead.

On September 10, 2025, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi clarified: “Nobody in the NFF authorized that statement. We saw it like everyone else and aren’t happy.” He stressed that blaming individual players for a team result is unfair.

Promoting Team Unity

Sanusi emphasized the match was a collective effort. “A win or draw belongs to the team, not one player,” he said. He defended Ekong, the team captain and 2023 AFCON MVP, saying, “His own goal was accidental. These things happen in football.”

Focus on Future Goals

The NFF is preparing for upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Sanusi expressed confidence in the team:

“Our players and coaches are united. The NFF and government support them fully.” Nigeria, with 11 points, is third in Group C, behind South Africa’s 17. The Super Eagles need wins against Lesotho and Benin Republic to qualify.

Addressing the Issue

Sanusi promised internal action over the unauthorized statement. “We’ll handle this matter,” he assured. The NFF had previously praised Calvin Bassey for his equalizing goal, while noting missed chances in the second half.

Why It Matters

The controversy highlights the need for fair treatment of players. By rejecting the criticism, the NFF aims to maintain team morale and focus on qualification goals.
