Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has clarified that she does not embrace the popular “Queen of Afrobeats” title often attached to her name. She explained that the tag makes her uncomfortable and that many other women in the genre deserve equal recognition.

Why Tiwa Savage Rejects the Title

Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, Tiwa admitted that although the title is flattering, she prefers not to accept it.

“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.

According to her, the label creates unnecessary pressure and expectations.

“Personally, I don’t like that tag. It’s uncomfortable because if I start accepting it, I need to be humble. Secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t accept it. But I appreciate it,” Tiwa explained.

Recognition Beyond Titles

The singer suggested the tag came about because she was one of the first Nigerian female artists to achieve major international success.

“I didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artistes in Nigeria to break through. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted,” she added.

Celebrating Women in Afrobeats

Tiwa Savage stressed that Afrobeats is not about one person carrying the crown but about the collective effort of many talented women shaping the genre.

By rejecting the “Queen” title, she highlighted the importance of recognizing all female artists contributing to the global success of Afrobeats.
