Israeli airstrikes hit Doha, Qatar, on September 9, 2025, targeting Hamas leaders during ceasefire talks. The attack shocked the world and threatened regional stability.

UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo addressed the Security Council, calling it a perilous turn in the Gaza conflict.

Targeting Peace Negotiators

The strikes occurred as Hamas officials met to discuss a US-proposed ceasefire and hostage release deal. DiCarlo stressed Qatar’s key role, alongside Egypt and the US, in brokering peace.

“Qatar’s commitment is vital. All parties must protect these efforts,” she said.

Respect for Sovereignty

DiCarlo urged respect for Qatar’s sovereignty. “Any country, including Qatar, deserves territorial integrity,” she noted. The attack undermined mediation channels at a critical time, weakening trust in diplomacy.

Key Concerns Raised

  • Escalation risks: Strikes during talks could derail hostage releases and end Gaza suffering.
  • Global impact: Actions like this erode conflict resolution mechanisms.
  • Call for restraint: Stakeholders must recommit to dialogue over violence.

Broader Implications

DiCarlo emphasized that violence won’t solve Middle East crises.

“Durable peace requires diplomacy, not more fighting,” she stated.

The urgency for a Gaza ceasefire has never been greater: “Strike a deal. Free the hostages. End the suffering.”

Why It Matters

The Doha strike highlights dangers to peacemaking in the Gaza war. It risks broader instability, urging all sides to prioritize talks. Qatar’s mediation role remains essential for regional peace.
