Thai Ex-PM

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, 76, moved to Klong Prem prison’s medical wing on Monday. A senior corrections official cited his age and chronic health issues.

The official, speaking anonymously, didn’t clarify if Thaksin is under treatment or just monitored.

Legal Battles Continue

Last week, Thailand’s Supreme Court ordered Thaksin to serve a one-year sentence. The court ruled his 2023 sentence, served in a hospital suite, was improper. Consequently, he’s now in a standard prison cell.

Thaksin’s Political Journey

Thaksin, a telecoms tycoon, is a polarizing figure in Thailand. He served as prime minister in 2001 and 2005. However, a 2006 military coup forced him into exile.

After returning in 2023, he faced an eight-year sentence for corruption, later reduced to one year via royal pardon. An early release program for elderly inmates further shortened his time.

Family Support and Health Updates

On Monday, Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, visited after his quarantine ended. She noted his hair was shaved per prison rules. “His health is stable, but he has blood pressure issues from prison stress,” she told supporters.

Political Dynasty Faces Challenges

Thaksin’s family has long clashed with Thailand’s pro-monarchy establishment. Meanwhile, his daughter Paetongtarn was recently removed as prime minister by court order. This setback weakens the Shinawatra political movement.

No Special Prison Privileges

Thaksin’s lawyer, Winyat Chatmontree, stressed he receives no special treatment. “He has no private room or extra security,” Winyat said. For now, Thaksin must serve time before requesting an external sentence, per regulations.
