Former France international defender Samuel Umtiti announced his retirement on Monday at age 31. The 2018 World Cup winner left Ligue 1 club Lille last season. Injuries plagued his career, but his legacy remains strong.

Emotional Farewell

Umtiti shared his decision on Instagram, reflecting on his journey. “After an intense career with ups and downs, it’s time to say goodbye,” he wrote. “I gave EVERYTHING with passion and regret NOTHING.”

From Cameroon to Lyon

Born in Cameroon, Umtiti moved to France as a child. He grew up in Lyon and started his professional career there. His talent as a center-back shone early, earning him a move to Barcelona.

Success at Barcelona

In 2016, Umtiti joined Barcelona, where he spent seven years. He won two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies. His time in Spain was marked by both triumphs and injury setbacks.

World Cup Glory

Umtiti played a key role in France’s 2018 World Cup victory in Russia. He scored the decisive goal in the semi-final against Belgium. His performance cemented his place in French football history.

Joining Elite Retirees

Umtiti is now the fifth 2018 World Cup winner to retire. He follows Raphael Varane, Blaise Matuidi, Adil Rami, and Steve Mandanda. His contributions to France’s success endure.

Injury Challenges at Lille

After a loan spell with Lecce in Italy, Umtiti signed with Lille in January 2024. Persistent injuries, including knee surgery, limited his playing time. These challenges led to his exit from the club.
