Poland will decide on its submarine supplier this week, aiming to buy its first submarines by December 2025. Prime Minister Donald Tusk shared this update on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

The decision falls under the Orka programme, which focuses on strengthening Poland’s naval power.

Why Poland Needs New Submarines

The Orka programme plans to acquire three submarines. It aims to modernize undersea warfare and boost Poland’s role in NATO.

Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has raised security concerns, prompting Poland to enhance its defenses against potential threats.

Choosing a Partner

Tusk told reporters, “We’re set to pass a resolution to secure these submarines by year-end.”

The government has reviewed bids from NATO and EU allies, with Germany, Italy, and Sweden as top contenders. This multi-billion-dollar project is a key step for Poland’s military.

Key Industry Partnerships

In early September 2025, Italy’s Fincantieri and Poland’s Armaments Group (PGZ) signed a deal to support the Orka programme. In June 2025, South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean strengthened its offer with a financing plan to supply submarines.

Strengthening NATO Defense

This purchase shows Poland’s dedication to improving its military and supporting NATO’s goals. It’s a vital move to ensure maritime security and address regional tensions in Eastern Europe.
