Diene Keita, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), arrived in Ivory Coast on September 21, 2025, for key discussions.
Her visit aims to deepen the agency’s collaboration with the West African nation to advance sexual and reproductive health.
A Beacon of Progress
“I chose Ivory Coast as my first stop because it shines as a model of hope in this region,” Keita said. “The country’s social and economic achievements are impressive.”
Despite these strides, challenges persist, including high maternal mortality, limited access to contraceptives, and frequent teenage pregnancies.
Focus on Youth and Health
Keita stressed the need for better access to reproductive health services. “When young people can use these services, we see fewer early pregnancies,” she said.
“This helps girls stay in school and opens doors to better job opportunities.”
Measurable Improvements
UNFPA’s work with Ivory Coast’s government has driven progress. Maternal mortality fell from 614 per 100,000 live births in 2012 to 385 in 2021. Modern contraceptive use also rose from 12.5% to 18% over the same period.
Strengthening Partnerships
Keita’s meetings focus on building on these gains. By addressing ongoing health challenges, UNFPA aims to support Ivory Coast’s efforts to improve lives and foster sustainable development.
