Jimmy Kimmel’s ABC show returns Tuesday after a quick pause. The halt started last week, causing big talks about Trump team pressure and free speech limits.

ABC’s Explanation

Disney, ABC’s owner, said Monday they stopped production to calm a tough time. “Some remarks were poorly timed and hurtful,” the statement noted.

“We talked with Jimmy and decided to restart Tuesday.”

Comment Sparks Backlash

The issue began with Kimmel’s vague remark on Monday’s show about Charlie Kirk’s killer. It went viral, leading to online anger.

FCC head Brendan Carr warned ABC’s stations. Groups like Nexstar and Sinclair skipped airing Kimmel, despite merger talks for Nexstar.

Behind-the-Scenes Tension

Sources say Kimmel planned to explain his words as twisted by critics. Disney leaders worried it would worsen things, so they paused the show indefinitely.

A Thursday meeting ended without agreement, with Kimmel holding firm.

Broad Support for Kimmel

Trump and some online voices cheered the pause. But most criticized Disney, Nexstar, and Sinclair for giving in.

Pundits, lawmakers, unions, stars, and even Republicans like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul called it a threat to media freedom. Many feared it made TV more like government-controlled news.

Key Voices Speak Out

California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted that Republicans censor in real time. Barack Obama said the admin takes “cancel culture” to extremes with threats to media.

Ben Stiller said it was wrong. Jamie Lee Curtis backed Kimmel. Jean Smart called it horrifying. Marc Maron warned it’s authoritarianism.

Unions and ACLU React

SAG-AFTRA and WGA condemned the move. WGA said disagreeing is core to freedom, not to be blocked by power or corporate fear.

The ACLU got 400 signatures from stars like Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep for a letter supporting speech rights.

FCC Internal Split

FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez slammed Carr’s tactics. “We can’t let violence justify censorship,” she wrote. “The FCC lacks power to punish disliked speech.”

Late-Night TV Struggles

Kimmel’s return comes as Stephen Colbert’s CBS show ends in May after cancellation. It happened just before FCC okayed a license shift to Skydance.

Kimmel’s deal ends next year. He’s hinted at retiring before. Will this push him out or keep him in?

Uncertain Broadcast Reach

It’s unclear if Kimmel airs nationwide. Sinclair wants an apology, meeting, and donation to Kirk’s group.

They own ABC stations in D.C. and more. Nexstar might skip too, but the show stays online after ABC run.
