On September 22, 2025, the journey to crown Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland kicked off with interdenominational prayers at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan North.
The former Oyo State governor will formally receive the staff and instrument of office on September 26 at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, in a grand event expected to draw President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Seamless Succession Process
Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Balogun-designate, emphasized that Ladoja’s ascension avoids the issues that marked the crowning of the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7, 2025, at age 90.
After Oba Lekan Balogun’s death, debates over Olakulehin’s health delayed his coronation, as his whereabouts were unclear.
Ajibola, then Otun Balogun, had pushed for time to verify Olakulehin’s fitness. “This time, Ladoja kept us informed,” Ajibola said.
“He called regularly, and we all agree he’s next. There’s no conflict.”
Crown Issue Resolved
Ajibola highlighted that Ladoja settled a potential hurdle by agreeing to wear the Olubadan crown, ensuring a smooth transition.
“The succession is clear with our two lines—Otun and Balogun,” he noted, adding that Ibadan’s chieftaincy system prevents disputes by following a defined order.
Leadership Expectations
Ajibola lauded Ladoja’s background as a former senator and governor, predicting his political savvy will boost Ibadan’s growth. “Combining his experience with traditional leadership will elevate our city,” he said.
Ajeniyi Ajewole, head of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, called Ladoja’s rise historic, as no former governor has become Olubadan.
Unity Across Faiths
At the prayer event, Methodist Prelate Sunday Makinde urged Ladoja to promote harmony among Ibadan’s Muslims, Christians, and traditionalists.
Chief Imam Abdulganiyu Agbotomokekere prayed for a reign of peace and prosperity.
The gathering included Quranic recitations, Psalm readings, and Ifa chants, with dignitaries like Oba Kolawole Adegbola, Oba Adebayo Akande, and Christian Association of Nigeria’s Joshua Akinyemiju present.
Ibadan’s Bright Future
Ajibola stressed the unique clarity of Ibadan’s succession, unlike other regions needing oracles. “God destined Ladoja’s reign,” he said, expressing joy for Ibadan’s peace.
The coronation is set to unite the city, with expectations high for Ladoja’s leadership.
