National-Assembly

The National Assembly of Nigeria has deferred the resumption of its plenary sessions by two weeks, shifting the original date of September 23, 2025, to October 7, 2025.

The announcement affects both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Senate Notification

Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the Senate President, issued a memo to senators, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused by the delay.

“The Senate’s plenary, initially set for September 23, is now scheduled for October 7,” the memo stated. Senators were urged to adjust their plans accordingly.

House of Representatives Update

A similar memo, dated September 22, 2025, was sent to House members by Clerk Yahaya Danzaria.

“The House plenary resumption has been moved to October 7, 2025,” it read, asking representatives to note the change and adapt their schedules.

Extended Recess

No specific reason for the postponement was provided. Both chambers began their recess on July 24, 2025, following the adjournment of plenary activities. This delay extends the break to 10 weeks, pausing legislative work during this period.

Implications

The postponement may affect pending bills and oversight duties, though lawmakers are expected to resume with a focus on key national issues when sessions restart. Further details on the agenda for October 7 are awaited.
