On September 24, 2025, President Bola Tinubu, through Vice-President Kashim Shettima, spoke at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.

He urged the UN to update its policies. “Nigeria deserves a permanent Security Council seat. The UN must match today’s world,” he said.

Nigeria’s Growth

Tinubu shared Nigeria’s rise from a colony of 20 million to a nation of over 236 million, soon to be the world’s third largest.

He criticized slow progress on issues like disarmament and trade fairness, calling them “marks against humanity.”

Support for Palestine

On Palestine, Tinubu backed a two-state solution. “Palestinians deserve equal respect and freedom,” he said, pushing for peace to end global suffering.

Fix Global Finance

Tinubu called for a new system to ease sovereign debt, like a “global court for finance,” to help developing nations grow. He opposed exporting raw materials, which causes inequality.

Africa’s Future

He highlighted Africa’s key minerals for new tech, urging local processing and fair deals to cut global tensions and boost wealth. “Nigeria and Africa must gain fairly,” he said.

Close Digital Gaps

Tinubu supported inclusive AI growth, calling for talks to help poorer nations access tech and close knowledge gaps.

Nigeria’s Reforms

He praised Nigeria’s tough economic changes, like ending subsidies, as a model. “We trust our people’s creativity, but change is hard,” he noted.

Beat Extremism

On terrorism, Tinubu said values win long-term fights. “Ideas, not just battles, bring lasting peace,” he said, vowing Nigeria’s focus on human rights.

Unite Globally

Tinubu urged stronger global teamwork, saying, “We’re all at risk until everyone is safe.” He pushed for quick, clear UN changes to stay relevant.
