Chakwera-and-Mutharika

On September 25, 2025, Peter Mutharika was named Malawi’s president-elect after securing 56% of the vote in the presidential election.

The Malawi Electoral Commission also declared Justice Dr. Jane Mayemu Ansah as vice president-elect. This marks Mutharika’s return to power after serving as president from 2014 to 2020.

Chakwera Steps Down

Mutharika defeated incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera, who gained 33% of the vote. Chakwera admitted defeat in a televised speech hours before the official announcement, paving the way for a smooth transition.

Nationwide Joy

Across Malawi, Mutharika’s supporters flooded the streets in celebration, hopeful for solutions to the nation’s economic struggles.

Malawi faces high inflation at 27%, severe shortages of fuel and food, and a weakening kwacha. These issues worsened after a 2023 cyclone and a devastating 2024 drought hit the country hard.

People’s Hopes

Lilongwe resident Lewis Kasama shared his expectations: “We want food on tables, cheaper fertilizer, and a stronger kwacha.

The president must unite us and avoid favoring any region.” Many Malawians echo his call for fair leadership and economic relief.

Tough Road Ahead

Mutharika inherits a country in crisis. The soaring inflation rate has driven up living costs, while food and fuel shortages disrupt daily life.

The 2023 cyclone and 2024 drought have strained agriculture, a key economic driver, leaving many farmers struggling. Restoring the kwacha’s value is also a top priority for his administration.

Leadership Challenge

As Mutharika prepares to take office, he faces the challenge of rebuilding trust in government. His previous term saw mixed results, and voters now expect quick action to ease economic hardship.

Uniting Malawi’s diverse regions will be key to his success, as past leadership has faced criticism for regional bias.

Looking Forward

Mutharika’s victory signals hope for many, but his ability to deliver on economic recovery and national unity will define his second term. Malawians are watching closely as he steps into this critical role.
