Dangote Petroleum Refinery has let go of every Nigerian employee, just one day after most joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

The move has ignited outrage over worker protections.

Union’s Quick Backlash

Political analyst Imran Wakili highlighted the dismissals on social media on September 25, 2025.

“Dangote Refinery laid off all Nigerian staff under ‘reorganization,’ right after 90% unionized.”

He posted, sharing a memo from the company’s Human Asset Management.

Memo Details

The September 25 memo, signed by Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, cited “total reorganization” due to sabotage reports in refinery units.

It ordered staff to hand over company items, get clearance, and receive computed benefits.

Company’s Statement

The refinery thanked workers for their contributions and promised payments per employment terms. However, no further comment has been issued on the union issue.

PENGASSAN’s Response

PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo, also Nigeria’s Trade Union Congress leader, confirmed the firings in an interview.

“It’s true, they acted fast after unionization,” he said. Osifo assured a reversal, stating, “They’ll bring everyone back.”

Labor Rights Fears

The swift action raises alarms about union busting. Workers had sought PENGASSAN membership for better wages and conditions. The layoffs come amid reports of operational issues at the refinery.

Broader Impact

This incident spotlights tensions in Nigeria’s energy sector. Labor groups call for investigations, fearing it discourages union efforts. As the refinery grows, fair treatment for local staff remains key.

What’s Next

PENGASSAN plans talks with Dangote management. The outcome could shape labor relations in Nigeria’s oil industry, with workers demanding their jobs back.
