Arts Theatre

President Bola Tinubu will open the newly renovated National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, on October 1, 2025, Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced the event on September 29.

Cultural Investment

The CBN and Bankers’ Committee funded the renovation, showcasing their commitment to Nigeria’s cultural legacy.

The theatre, renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in July 2024 to honor the Nobel Laureate, aims to boost the creative economy.

Event Highlights

Tinubu will lead governors, lawmakers, diplomats, industry leaders, academics, and youth for the launch.

The event features performances by the National Troupe, remarks from Wole Soyinka, and speeches by CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Minister Hannatu Musawa.

Theatre Upgrades

The revamp includes a modern HVAC system, advanced fire safety, new electrical and water systems, cutting-edge audio-visual tech, top-tier stage engineering, 17 new lifts, solar power, refurbished interiors, and restored historic artworks.

Leaders’ Remarks

Cardoso called the theatre a symbol of Nigeria’s heritage, transformed into a world-class venue. Sanwo-Olu said it will host global events and showcase arts.

Musawa hailed it as a national pride, fostering creative opportunities.

Historical Significance

Built under Yakubu Gowon and completed in 1976 under Olusegun Obasanjo, the theatre hosted FESTAC ’77. Its revival marks a new era for Nigeria’s cultural scene.

Why It Matters

The reopening celebrates Nigeria’s artistic heritage and boosts its creative industry, aligning with the 2025 Independence theme of collective progress.

What’s Next

The Wole Soyinka Centre will serve as a hub for performances and conferences, strengthening Nigeria’s global cultural presence in 2025.
