South Africa Loses Points in World Cup Qualifier Over Player Error

October 1, 2025

Mokoena

FIFA has penalized the South African Football Association (SAFA) for playing midfielder Teboho Mokoena in a March 21, 2025, World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

Mokoena was ineligible due to two prior yellow cards, leading to a 3-0 forfeit in Lesotho’s favor.

Match Overturned

South Africa’s original 2-0 win is now a loss, stripping three points from Bafana Bafana. SAFA must pay a 10,000 Swiss franc fine, and Mokoena receives a warning.

Group C Shake-Up

Benin and South Africa tie at 14 points after eight games, with Benin leading on goal difference. Nigeria and Rwanda have 11 points each, Lesotho 9, and Zimbabwe 4, already out.

SAFA’s Appeal

SAFA plans to appeal within 10 days to the FIFA Appeals Committee. “We’re committed to supporting Bafana Bafana’s qualification,” SAFA said, apologizing for the oversight.

Minister’s Anger

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie launched a probe into SAFA’s error. “This incompetence won’t go unpunished,” he said, vowing a full investigation and accountability.

Remaining Fixtures

South Africa faces Zimbabwe and Rwanda in October. Wins would give 20 points for direct qualification. Benin plays Rwanda then Nigeria, while Nigeria meets Lesotho and Benin.

Rwanda and Lesotho

Rwanda needs two wins for 17 points but has few goals. Lesotho’s gifted win gives hope, but beating Nigeria and Zimbabwe is unlikely.

Why It Matters

The sanction turns Group C into a four-team race. Nigeria’s +2 goal difference needs boosting to challenge Benin and South Africa.

What’s Next

October matches decide Group C’s 2026 World Cup spot. SAFA’s appeal outcome could alter the standings.
