Ghana’s women’s rugby league team, the Leopardess, is set for a thrilling three-match series against Nigeria in Lagos, starting October 4, 2025.

The games, at Rugby School Nigeria in Eko Atlantic City and Alaro City, carry world ranking points and promise intense competition.

NSA Director’s Boost

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of Ghana’s National Sports Authority, visited the squad before their departure, offering encouragement.

He praised their role as pioneers in women’s rugby and urged unity and discipline.

Team Spirit

Ankrah noted the young squad’s potential, saying, “Your talent reflects Ghana’s future in the sport. Play with pride and represent us well.” His words motivated the players, who vowed to give their best.

Squad Composition

The Leopardess features talent from Accra Ladies, including captain Elizabeth Adongo and assistant Hilaria Wuaku, plus Millicent Njomaba, Jacqueline Ansah, Princess Avorkah, Gracelove Hammond, Fati Bhom, Ivy Benyah, Gifty Sowah, and Eunice Laweo.

Awutu Ladies contribute Celestine Kumah, Mariama Musah, Minawara Alhassan, and Henrietta Arhin.

School players are Grace Nketiah (Pentecost SHS), Maria Tii Pegyine (St. Michaels SHS), Kesse Mary (Afigya Secondary Technical), and Christiana Ndewine (Aduman Secondary). Coaches Riddick Alibah and Julius Fiakpornu lead the team.

Nigeria’s Advantage

Nigeria, unbeaten against Ghana in three past meetings, enters as favorites. Coach Bolu Fagboran views the series as preparation for the Women’s World Cup qualifiers in Canada, focusing on cohesion and intensity.

Australian Support

Assistant coach Luke Shearman and two Australia-based Nigerian players join from Down Under. Shearman said, “Nigeria’s talent is world-class. This series will showcase African women’s rugby potential.”

Series Sponsor

Alaro City, a long-time Nigeria Rugby League partner, sponsors the event. They’re building a dedicated pitch for Nigeria’s World Series training camp.

Why It Matters

The series promotes women’s rugby in West Africa, fostering growth and competition. It’s a step toward global recognition for both teams.

What’s Next

The first match is October 4 at Rugby School Nigeria. The series will highlight emerging talents and strengthen regional rugby ties.
