Gateway International Airport in Ogun State celebrated its first commercial flight on Tuesday morning. Despite heavy rain, ValueJet operated the landmark trip to Abuja.
Passengers lined up at the terminal, eager to board the state-owned airport’s debut scheduled service.
Flight Schedule Announced
Ogun’s media adviser, Kayode Akinmade, shared last month that ValueJet would fly to Abuja on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Return flights depart Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 4 p.m., landing at Gateway by 5:15 p.m. This regular schedule kicks off the airport’s operations.
Governor Highlights Milestone
Governor Dapo Abiodun met with NCAA Director General Captain Chris Najomo in Abeokuta on Monday.
They discussed aviation reforms and the airport’s role in Ogun’s growth. “We’re committed to top safety and efficiency standards,” Abiodun said, signaling readiness for full operations.
NCAA Grants Approval
In August, the NCAA issued operational permits for Gateway Airport after rigorous inspections.
Abiodun called it a historic achievement, noting it’s the first new Nigerian airport certified under current standards. The NCAA praised its modern facilities and readiness as a model for future projects.
Airport Specifications
The airport holds an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an ARFFS Category 6 rating. It supports daytime flights from sunrise to sunset.
Runway 05/23 uses a non-precision approach with Area Navigation procedures, ensuring safe and efficient operations.
