Nigerian fashion icon Alphadi conducted a masterclass at Rome’s Academy of Fashion in September.

The event, tied to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s World Cotton Day on October 7, 2025, focused on African cotton. Alphadi guided 14 students in merging African and Italian design traditions.

Blending Cultures Through Design

Known as the “Magician of the Desert,” Alphadi helped students create seven unique cotton-based designs.

“This celebrates Africa’s potential,” he said. “African cotton is world-class, suitable for Sahel communities, Europeans, and beyond.” His work highlights the continent’s strengths in global fashion.

Student’s Cultural Exchange

Student Cecilia Marchesini called the experience transformative. “Working with Alphadi introduced us to a distinct culture,” she said.

“Blending it with ours revealed surprising similarities.” As a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for African Innovation, Alphadi inspired the group’s creative exploration.

World Cotton Day’s Roots

The UN declared October 7 as World Cotton Day in 2021, driven by African nations. The initiative promotes cotton’s global value.

FAO economist El Mamoun Amrouk noted, “African countries pushed for this day to spotlight their cotton industry and its worldwide impact.”

Cotton’s Global Impact

Cotton supports millions of jobs, especially in poorer nations. It drives export revenue and economic growth.

World Cotton Day aims to highlight its role in trade, development, and poverty reduction, impacting over 80 countries.

Fashion Meets Sustainability

This year, FAO collaborated with the fashion industry to trace cotton’s journey from fields to runways. The partnership emphasizes its importance for young designers and sustainable economies.

Alphadi’s masterclass exemplified this, showcasing cotton’s versatility and cultural significance.
