Nigeria’s men’s hockey team claimed the bronze medal at the 2025 Hockey Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Kenya 3-1 in the third-place playoff on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt.

The victory marked a strong showing for Nigeria in the 12th edition of the continental tournament, hosted by the African Hockey Federation alongside the women’s event.

The match saw Nigeria take an early lead in the 16th minute through Solomon Dennis’s sharp field goal, putting pressure on Kenya.

The East Africans responded in the 24th minute with a field goal from Usagi Sutcliffe, tying the score at 1-1. After the break, Nigeria dominated with precise set-piece play.

Star player Samaila James scored twice from penalty corners in the 44th and 49th minutes, securing a 3-1 win and the bronze for the West Africans.

Tournament Journey and Context

The two-week championship showcased Africa’s top hockey teams in intense competition. Nigeria’s men displayed tactical growth and resilience, bouncing back from a tough semi-final loss.

Their bronze follows a consistent podium presence, marking their second straight third-place finish. Samaila James shone brightly, finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer with eight goals, highlighting Nigeria’s attacking strength.

In contrast, Nigeria’s women’s team fell 1-0 to Kenya in their third-place match, with Bwire Grace’s 45th-minute goal clinching bronze for Kenya. The men’s win offered some redemption, underscoring Nigeria’s rising status in African hockey.

South Africa’s Dominance

South Africa cemented their regional dominance in both events. The men’s team crushed hosts Egypt 5-1 in the final, earning their eighth African title and a spot at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.

This marked their seventh straight final against Egypt, with South Africa delivering a commanding performance. Their women’s team also excelled, defeating Ghana 4-0 to claim a ninth title and World Cup qualification.

Nigeria’s Growing Presence

Nigeria’s men’s team showed marked improvement, blending discipline with scoring flair. James’s standout performance and the team’s penalty corner efficiency were key to their success.

The bronze medal signals Nigeria’s potential to challenge top teams like South Africa in future competitions. Coaches and players expressed pride in their progress, with fans celebrating the achievement as a step toward global recognition.

Looking Ahead

The 2025 tournament, hosted in Ismailia, highlighted Africa’s hockey talent. South Africa’s continued supremacy sets a high bar, but Nigeria’s consistent podium finishes show promise.

With young stars like James leading the way, Nigeria aims to build on this momentum for future events, including the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The bronze medal not only boosts national pride but also inspires young athletes, reinforcing hockey’s growing appeal in West Africa.
