Nigeria’s aviation sector dodged chaos on October 22, 2025. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) unions scrapped a strike set for midnight after intense talks with Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo in Abuja.

Tunde Moshood, Keyamo’s aide, announced the deal, which tackles staff welfare issues. This keeps vital weather services running, ensuring safe flights across Nigeria.

The pact isn’t just a fix it’s a bold move to reshape NiMet’s future, thrilling workers and travelers alike.

Talks Bring Results

Tough negotiations led to a signed deal that eased tensions. “We dug into the details and found common ground,” the statement said. Keyamo and the Permanent Secretary promised to push for salary hikes with authorities, tackling pay disputes.

The unions vowed to stay patient, tracking the 2024 Minimum Wage and nine months of overdue pay boosts.

This teamwork signals a fresh start, with NiMet staff ready to keep skies safe while their needs are met.

Big Wins for Staff

The deal brought quick gains. NiMet will pay 30 overlooked workers from its own funds right away, easing their financial strain. For furniture grants, 35% of the approved sum starts now, with 65% planned for 2026. These steps show both sides’ readiness to work together.

Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Kana will lead a team to recover funds owed to NiMet, boosting its budget. This strengthens NiMet’s role in delivering key weather data.

Boosting Efficiency

The deal goes beyond money. NiMet’s leaders will include union reps in talks with the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission to secure allowances and staffing needs. The Head of Civil Service was urged to speed things up. “We’ll act fast,” the statement said, aiming to avoid future disputes.

This approach gives NiMet’s workers a voice, building a stronger, more stable agency.

A Bigger Picture

This deal fits Nigeria’s push for progress, from healthcare boosts to fixing systemic issues. NiMet’s work in aviation safety is critical a strike could have halted flights nationwide.

Keyamo praised the unions’ “smart approach,” highlighting the ministry’s focus on worker welfare and aviation reforms. The agreement builds trust and lifts productivity.

This isn’t just about stopping a strike it’s about creating a stronger aviation system for millions.

A Bright Future

NiMet’s unions and leaders turned tension into triumph through dialogue. By addressing pay, grants, and approvals, the deal sets a path for lasting change. As Nigeria tackles economic challenges, this agreement stands out as a model of teamwork.

With Keyamo’s leadership and the unions’ drive, NiMet is ready to shine, ensuring safer skies and better lives for workers.
