King Charles III has taken strong action against his brother, Prince Andrew. The King removed Andrew’s royal title and ordered him to leave Royal Lodge, his Windsor home of over 20 years.
Buckingham Palace issued a statement on Thursday:
“The King has started the process to remove Prince Andrew’s royal titles and honors.”
Andrew, aged 65, will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. He loses the “prince” title and all royal privileges.
He must also give up Royal Lodge. The King has served notice to end the lease. Andrew will move to a smaller home on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. The King will pay for it privately.
Why This Happened
Andrew faces ongoing questions about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. New claims and old allegations have increased pressure.
The palace said:
“These steps are needed, even though Andrew denies all charges.”
They also expressed support for abuse victims.
Reaction from Virginia Giuffre’s Family
Virginia Giuffre accused Andrew of assault when she was 17. She died by suicide in April at age 41.
Her brother, Skye Roberts, spoke to the BBC:
“A regular American girl used truth and courage to bring down a British prince.”
A Rare Royal Punishment
Removing royal titles is very uncommon. It last happened in 1919 to a prince who supported Germany in World War I.
Andrew remains eighth in line to the throne. Only Parliament can remove his Duke of York title. He stopped using it recently.
Prince Harry kept his titles after stepping back from royal duties. This shows a clear difference in treatment.
