QUAKE

A strong earthquake, measuring 6.3 magnitude, severely shook northern Afghanistan overnight. Health officials confirmed on Monday that the tremor killed at least 20 people and injured 320 others.

A spokesperson for the Health Ministry issued a caution. They noted that the number of fatalities is likely to increase. Rescue workers are currently digging through debris in several affected regions.

Epicenter and Immediate Response

Most of those injured suffered minor wounds, according to Yousaf Hammad. He is a spokesman for the nation’s disaster management agency.

Hammad confirmed that many of the injured were released after receiving basic medical attention.

The United States Geological Survey reported the quake’s epicenter. It was situated 22 kilometers from the town of Khulm.

The tremor originated at a depth of 28 kilometers. The earthquake’s effects were also felt in the capital city, Kabul. The most severe destruction was reported in Afghanistan’s Balkh and Samangan provinces.

The Ministry of Defence announced that rescue teams and emergency aid units have arrived at the scene. They have immediately begun extensive rescue operations.

Damage to Cultural Landmark

Footage shared on social media shows the earthquake caused structural damage. This damage occurred at the Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif. This centuries-old structure is considered one of Afghanistan’s most significant religious landmarks.

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Afghanistan due to its geological location. A previous magnitude 6 quake in late August tragically killed at least 2,200 people.
