HAKIMI

Morocco’s star right-back, Achraf Hakimi, now faces a serious race against the calendar. A significant injury sustained this week puts his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in jeopardy. Morocco is set to host the prestigious continental event.

His club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), released an announcement on Wednesday. The statement confirmed the international defender would be sidelined for “several weeks.”

He suffered the injury from a “serious sprain to his left ankle.” This occurred during Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich. The AFCON tournament is scheduled to begin on December 21.

The Collision: A Costly Red Card

The incident occurred just before halftime. Bayern winger Luis Díaz injured the PSG defender during a tackle that earned Díaz a red card. Díaz had scored both goals in Bayern’s convincing win.

This victory marked the club’s 16th consecutive win. However, the referee immediately sent him off for the reckless challenge on Hakimi.

Hakimi was forced to be substituted. His left leg appeared to become awkwardly twisted as he fell.

Díaz Expresses Public Regret

Díaz publicly expressed his regret about the incident on social media. “It was an emotionally charged evening,” Díaz posted. “Football always reminds us that in 90 minutes, anything can happen, the best and the worst.” He added his concern for the injured player: “I wish Hakimi a speedy return to the pitch.”

Focus Shifts to Rehabilitation

The Moroccan defender’s focus must now shift entirely to recovery. His presence is considered vital for the Moroccan national team. They are preparing to host the continental tournament.

Implications for PSG and Morocco

The unexpected injury presents a major concern for both club and country. PSG loses a key defensive and attacking outlet for important league fixtures leading up to the winter break.

Furthermore, Morocco faces the distinct possibility of missing its influential right-back for the entire AFCON tournament, jeopardizing its chances of winning on home soil.
