Nwabali Vows to Win 2025 AFCON Title for Nigeria

Nigeria’s star goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is highly optimistic about the national team’s chances of winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The shot-stopper acknowledged the immense pressure from fans, noting that supporters expect the team not just to compete, but to return home with the trophy.

The 2025 AFCON tournament is scheduled to be played in Morocco, running from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Learning from Past Final Loss

Nwabali’s breakthrough with the national team came during the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast, where his performances made him a standout player. He believes the squad has absorbed crucial lessons from their deep run to the final last year.

“AFCON is one of the biggest tournaments in the world, not just in Africa,” Nwabali stated during an interview.

“As a big nation, we are always expected to win, not just to participate.”

Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat in last year’s final against the host nation, Ivory Coast. The Chippa United goalkeeper is confident that the experience gained has strengthened the entire squad’s resolve ahead of the upcoming tournament in Morocco. “Playing the final last year, I feel this year we are going to win it,” he added.

Nigeria last won the AFCON title in 2013 under the late coach Stephen Keshi. Prior wins were recorded in 1980 and 1994.

Competition and Scrutiny

Nwabali’s stellar performance in Ivory Coast earned him widespread praise and cemented his position as the country’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, he has recently drawn criticism from some quarters.

Concerns have been raised over errors, excessive antics, and perceived time-wasting during the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, which resulted in unnecessary bookings.

Ahead of the AFCON tournament, Nwabali and his teammates must first focus on their journey to the World Cup. They are scheduled to participate in the African playoffs next week.

Coach Eric Chelle is expected to announce his final squad list soon for the playoffs and later for the AFCON. Nwabali will face strong competition for the starting role, with Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye likely making a return to the national team setup.
