Trump Announces New Visa Ban: “Trim Down to Get Approved”

U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a significant new restriction affecting visa applicants. This includes individuals from Nigeria and various other countries.

The President stated on Tuesday that his administration is developing a rule to prohibit individuals who are “grossly overweight” and suffer related health problems from entering the United States.

Overburdening the Health System

Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, Mr. Trump outlined the rationale behind the potential ban. He emphasized that the restriction is aimed at preventing individuals who might unduly “overburden” the U.S. health system due to weight-related diseases.

“We will not ban all fat people from entering our Great Country,” Mr. Trump wrote, “only those whose poor health will overburden our health care system.”

The restriction will reportedly exempt applicants who are only “slightly overweight.” However, he clearly stated that “the bigger ones will need to trim down to get approved.”

The President also disclosed plans to expand the restriction soon. This expansion will include expatriates already residing in the country. He suggested that no “grossly overweight” persons will be welcomed, regardless of their current status. “We will EXPAND this rule to cover Expats in the near future,” he stated.

Broadening Health Scrutiny at Embassies

The President’s announcement comes as the administration finalizes a new visa guideline. This directive was recently delivered via cable to embassies across the United States.

The directive instructs consular officers to conduct a closer examination of applicants’ medical histories. The goal is to identify individuals who might require future reliance on public healthcare services.

Under this policy, consular officers now possess broader authority to reject applications. This power is based not only on current health issues but also on the calculation of possible future medical costs. The directive explicitly states: “You must consider an applicant’s health.”

The notice lists several conditions that could lead to high treatment expenses. These include heart and lung diseases, cancer, diabetes, and mental health disorders.

The guideline specifically singles out obesity as a major risk factor. It warns that obesity can contribute to conditions like asthma, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, which increase long-term healthcare costs.

Financial Viability and Family Health

Visa officers now have a clear mandate. They must verify that applicants possess adequate financial resources to cover any potential medical expenses. This must be done without becoming dependent on government aid.

The new rules also require officers to evaluate the health status of an applicant’s family members. This includes elderly parents and children.

This evaluation step aims to determine whether potential caregiving responsibilities might compromise the applicant’s ability to remain financially stable in the United States.

This new scrutiny on health is accompanied by another recent announcement from Mr. Trump. He announced a “fat shot” deal with two pharmaceutical companies. The deal aims at lowering the cost of popular weight-loss drugs.
