The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has forcefully condemned the recent attack on a Government Girls’ School in the Maga community of Kebbi State, North-West Nigeria. The assault tragically resulted in the death of the school’s Vice-Principal and the reported abduction of 25 students.
A communications specialist for UNICEF Nigeria, Susan Akila, issued a statement on Tuesday addressing the incident.
Call for Release and Accountability
The agency highlighted the immediate urgency of the crisis. The statement read:
“This tragic incident is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children, schools, and the personnel they rely on to learn safely.”
UNICEF extended its sympathy to the affected community: “We stand with the affected community at this difficult time. Our heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost loved ones, and we wish a full recovery for those injured.”
The organization immediately demanded action from authorities:
- UNICEF urged the swift release of the abducted children.
- The agency stressed that students, educational facilities, and their personnel must be protected from any form of attack under international law.
- It demanded that those responsible for this incident must be held accountable according to national and international standards.
Implementing the Safe Schools Declaration
The statement recalled that the Nigerian government officially endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration in 2015. This declaration outlines specific steps necessary to protect the civilian nature of educational institutions. It ensures students can access learning safely, even during conflict.
UNICEF called upon all relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to implement the provisions of the Safe Schools Declaration across Nigeria.
The agency affirmed its dedication to working with communities, civil society, and government partners. This collaboration aims to strengthen existing child protection systems.
It also seeks to promote safe and inclusive learning environments nationwide. The statement concluded: “These systems and environments must be reinforced to prevent future tragedies. No child should be put at risk while pursuing an education.”
