MACRON

French President Emmanuel Macron is embarking on a new tour of Africa this week. The Élysée Palace states that he hopes to “spur” new “dynamics” in the relationship between France and the continent.

The tour starts with a visit to Mauritius on Thursday. There, Macron will promote partnerships with neighboring French islands, specifically Mayotte and Réunion.

G20 Summit in South Africa

After Mauritius, Macron flies to South Africa. He will attend the G20 summit over the weekend. Notably, this event is marked by a boycott from the United States.

The French president hopes to use this event for diplomacy. He plans to meet with his Algerian counterpart. The goal is to appease lingering tensions between their two countries.

A New Chapter in Gabon

The tour also includes a stop in Gabon. Macron is scheduled to meet with President Brice Oligui Nguema.

The army general won the presidential election in April. His victory effectively ended a two-year transition period. That period followed the ousting of Ali Bongo, a long-time ally of France, in a coup.

The Élysée Palace stated that Macron intends to show “support” to the new Gabonese “authorities.”

Conclusion in Angola

Finally, the French president’s tour will conclude in Angola. There, he will attend the European Union – African Union summit.

Leaders expect to strengthen cooperation in several areas. Discussions will focus on peace and security, trade, and green development.
