Vatican Defends Monogamy in Response to African Bishops

VATICAN

The Vatican has issued a firm defense of monogamous marriage. On Tuesday, the doctrine office released a new document. It reinforces the union between a man and a woman as the only valid path.

This move directly answers concerns raised by African bishops. In recent years, these delegates have reported that polygamy remains widely practiced among their flocks. Consequently, they asked the Vatican for clear guidance.

“A Dear One”: Inside the Document

The new document is titled “A Dear One: In Praise of Monogamy.” It serves as a theological resource for the church.

The text traces the history of marriage through the Bible, poetry, and philosophy. It also cites various popes and church councils throughout history.

The document is 40 pages long and contains 256 footnotes. However, the introduction offers a shortcut. The author suggests that reading the final chapter and conclusion is enough to grasp the essential message.

The text reiterates Catholic doctrine. It defines the sacrament of marriage as a lifelong, exclusive union open to new life. Furthermore, the final section explores sexuality, procreation, and the attraction between couples.

A Controversial Author

Argentine Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández authored the document. He currently serves as the Vatican’s doctrine chief.

Fernández recalls his previous writings on sexuality in this new text. However, he has faced criticism from conservatives since his appointment by Pope Francis in 2023.

Critics recently unearthed out-of-print books by the Cardinal. These works explored human sexuality and spirituality in graphic detail. Neither title appeared in his official bibliography when he took office. Pope Francis has tasked him with radically changing the doctrine office’s course.

Bridging a Divide

This release adds a new layer to the relationship between Fernández and African clergy.

Fernández wrote the controversial 2023 declaration allowing priests to bless same-sex couples. That document prompted an unprecedented rebuke from African bishops. In a unified statement, they refused to follow it.

Now, the Vatican appears to be addressing the specific pastoral needs of that same region. This new text aims to support bishops as they navigate cultural challenges regarding marriage.
