US Halts Refugees Green Cards Pending Massive Review

The Trump administration has launched a massive review of refugees. This covers everyone admitted to the United States during Joe Biden’s presidency.

The move marks a significant escalation in immigration enforcement. It targets a humanitarian program designed to protect those fleeing war and persecution.

According to an internal directive, the government will conduct a comprehensive audit. Joseph Edlow, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), signed the order. Agencies must “re-interview” all refugees admitted between January 20, 2021, and February 20, 2025.

Allegations of Lax Vetting

The administration defends this retrospective review. They claim the previous leadership prioritized “quantity” over national security.

The directive argues that vetting was compromised during the Biden years. Consequently, a total re-evaluation is necessary.

USCIS officials stated they are ready to uphold the law. They want to ensure the refugee program is not abused. The agency will compile a priority list for re-interviews within the next 90 days.

Green Cards Suspended Immediately

This policy has severe implications. It affects an estimated 200,000 people.

The directive immediately suspends green card approvals for this group. Usually, refugees apply for permanent residency one year after arrival.

Crucially, the review applies even to those who already have green cards. The memo notes that individuals have “no right to appeal” if the agency disqualifies them. Instead, they would have to plead their case in immigration court during removal proceedings.

A Program Under Fire

The review affects a diverse population. Between late 2021 and late 2024, the U.S. admitted over 185,000 refugees.

The largest groups came from conflict zones. These include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Syria.

This is the latest restriction on the program. Earlier this year, the administration set a new annual cap of just 7,500 entries. This figure is the lowest since the program began in 1980.

Advocates Condemn “Cold-Hearted” Policy

Immigrant rights advocates have slammed the plan. They warn it will cause chaos and fear among vulnerable people.

Critics argue that refugees are already the most rigorously vetted travelers. Many wait years for approval before entering the U.S.

They describe the new policy as “shockingly ill-conceived.” Furthermore, they call it a waste of government resources. Advocates view the move as a “cold-hearted treatment” of people attempting to build new lives.
