Reps: Rescue Goodluck Jonathan Now

Goodluck-Jonathan

The House of Representatives has demanded urgent action from the Federal Government. Lawmakers want the immediate rescue of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He is currently trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup.

The former leader is in the West African nation on an official assignment. He is leading a high-level observer mission for the African Union and ECOWAS.

Jonathan was monitoring the weekend’s presidential election. However, the military seized power, closed borders, and suspended the constitution.

“A Matter of National Importance”

This urgent matter took center stage during Thursday’s plenary session. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu interrupted regular proceedings to highlight the crisis.

House Leader Julius Ihonvbere addressed the lawmakers. He confirmed that Jonathan is caught in the political crossfire. Ihonvbere reminded the House of the former president’s extensive diplomatic service.

“Currently, he is in Guinea-Bissau due to the coup,” Ihonvbere stated.

He emphasized that the safety of a former Nigerian Head of State is paramount. This applies regardless of the geopolitical complexities.

Protecting Every Citizen

The motion received strong bipartisan support. Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda backed the call. However, he broadened the request.

Chinda insisted that the rescue operation must include all Nigerian citizens. He argued they should not be abandoned in the conflict zone.

“The importance we attach to his life should also apply to every other Nigerian,” Chinda argued.

Consequently, the House adopted the motion via a voice vote. The resolution mandates the Federal Government to use diplomatic channels immediately. They must facilitate Jonathan’s return and ensure the protection of all Nigerians affected by the crisis.

A Nation Under Lockdown

The situation in Bissau is deteriorating rapidly. On Wednesday, the military leadership dissolved the government. They also suspended the electoral process just three days after the polls.

Soldiers have sealed the borders. Furthermore, incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló is reportedly in military custody.

The country is now under a strict lockdown. As a result, international travel is paralyzed, leaving observers and foreign nationals stranded.
