Samuel Eto’o has successfully secured a second term as the President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot). The former Barcelona star was re-elected without opposition on Saturday. This victory solidifies his control over football administration in the country for the next four years.

During the General Assembly in Cameroon’s central region, Eto’o achieved a unanimous victory. He received all 85 available votes, confirming his fresh mandate with absolute support from the delegates present.

Government Friction and Public Protests

Despite his landslide victory, the election took place amidst significant tension. The Ministry of Education, which oversees the national sports portfolio, openly opposed the process. In fact, government officials had previously called for the cancellation of the General Assembly.

Furthermore, the atmosphere outside the venue was volatile. Demonstrators gathered to protest against the proceedings. These opponents voiced serious accusations of misconduct regarding the federation’s current leadership.

Backlash Over World Cup Failure

The re-election comes during a difficult period for Eto’o’s administration. He has faced growing scrutiny regarding his management of Cameroonian football.

Dissatisfaction with his presidency intensified sharply after the national team’s recent struggles. Specifically, critics have blamed the federation for the Indomitable Lions’ failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. This on-field underperformance fueled much of the opposition seen during the election weekend.
