MACRON

French President Emmanuel Macron has commenced a three-day state visit to China. On Wednesday, he received a grand ceremonial welcome at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The visit began with high-level diplomatic exchanges. Chinese President Xi Jinping urged France to collaborate with Beijing. He emphasized the need to foster multilateralism and strengthen global solidarity.

Xi noted the importance of navigating international challenges through shared interests.

“China is ready to work with France,” Xi stated. He expressed a desire to overcome various disturbances while bearing in mind the fundamental interests of both peoples.

Furthermore, he advocated for open cooperation. He hopes the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and France will evolve effectively over the next 60 years.

Strategic Talks and the Ukraine Crisis

On Thursday, the two leaders engaged in extensive discussions. They covered a broad spectrum of issues, ranging from global economic imbalances to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

A primary objective of President Macron’s itinerary is securing Beijing’s influence. He hopes China can help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

China remains a significant trading partner for Russia. While Beijing frequently calls for peace negotiations, it has stopped short of condemning Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Strengthening Economic Ties

Macron is accompanied by a large business delegation for this visit. It is his fourth state visit to the world’s second-largest economy.

The diplomatic engagement yielded immediate results. The two nations signed 12 new cooperation agreements following the bilateral talks.

These accords span diverse sectors, including:

  • Bilateral investment
  • Nuclear energy strategies
  • Panda conservation efforts
  • Policies addressing population aging

Cultural Diplomacy in Sichuan

The leaders are scheduled to travel to Chengdu in China’s southwestern Sichuan province. They will continue their dialogue there.

The itinerary includes a visit to Dujiangyan. This site houses one of the world’s oldest functional irrigation systems.

The province holds symbolic significance for the two nations. Currently, it is home to two giant pandas that China previously loaned to France. This visit highlights the cultural dimensions of their diplomatic relationship.
