The United Nations has strongly condemned the escalating crackdown in Uganda. This suppression targets political opposition and media ahead of the January 15 general election.
Credible reports indicate that security forces have arrested at least 550 people since the year began.
The enforcement campaign primarily targets members of the National Unity Platform (NUP). Presidential challenger Bobi Wine leads this main opposition party.
“Drones” and Secret Abductions
The UN highlighted disturbing tactics used by security forces. Specifically, the report noted the use of unmarked minibuses known locally as “drones.”
Allegedly, agents use these vehicles to abduct citizens. They then transport victims to unofficial detention centers called “safe houses.” There, authorities hold the detainees incommunicado.
Assault on Press Freedom
Beyond targeting activists, the UN criticized the government for stifling the press. The body cited instances where officials withdrew accreditation from journalists due to critical reporting.
The rights body urged Ugandan authorities to halt these “repressive tactics” immediately. They also called for the release of all arbitrarily detained individuals.
This appeal comes at a critical time. 81-year-old President Yoweri Museveni is seeking to extend his four-decade rule in the upcoming polls.
