Christopher Musa confirmed

President Bola Tinubu has publicly lauded the legislative branch for its speed. On Wednesday, the Red Chamber finalized the process where Christopher Musa confirmed his new role as the Minister of Defence.

According to a statement released on his official X handle this Thursday, the President viewed the Senate’s rapid action as essential for national stability.

A Critical Juncture

Tinubu emphasized the urgency of the appointment.

He noted that the name of the former Chief of Defence Staff was forwarded for screening just 48 hours prior. Consequently, the swift ratification allows the administration to address pressing security challenges without a leadership vacuum.

“I want to commend the Nigerian Senate for its expedited confirmation of General Musa yesterday,” Tinubu wrote. “His appointment comes at a critical juncture in our lives as a Nation.”

Immediate Investigations Promised

The confirmation process was far from a mere formality.

Before securing the vote, General Musa faced a grueling five-hour screening session. Lawmakers grilled the appointee regarding recent, high-profile security failures.

Specifically, the Senate demanded answers regarding the controversial withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State. This tactical retreat occurred shortly before a mass abduction of schoolgirls took place on November 17.

In response, Musa pledged to open a “full-scale investigation” into the incident immediately upon taking office.

Tackling Attacks on Officers

Furthermore, the new Minister committed to looking inward at military vulnerabilities.

He promised to probe the assassination of Brigade Commander Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba in Borno State. This investigation aims to address the worrying trend of attacks targeting senior military personnel.

Background of the Transition

This change in the cabinet follows a sudden vacancy.

The position opened up after the resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru. Reports indicate that Badaru left the post on health grounds, necessitating a quick replacement.

Tinubu described his new appointee as “a fine gentleman” capable of steering the ship.

“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the President concluded.
