Trump Signals Scale Back of US Ukraine Support

US President Donald Trump has criticized European leaders as “weak” and suggested the United States might scale back its support for Ukraine.

In a recent interview, Trump accused “decaying” European countries of two major failures:

1. Failing to control migration.
2. Failing to take decisive action to end the Ukraine-Russia war.

He alleged that European nations were letting Kyiv fight “until they drop”. European leaders, meanwhile, are defining their role in the US-led peace efforts, fearing a quick, US-driven resolution could undermine the continent’s long-term stability.

Pressure on Kyiv and Alliance Response

Trump continued to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to agree to a deal, urging him to “play ball” by ceding territory to Moscow. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

• Zelensky’s Stance: Zelensky has consistently ruled out surrendering land. Ukraine is preparing to present a revised peace plan to the White House. Zelensky confirmed that the Ukrainian and European elements of the plan are developed and ready for US partners.
• UK Reaction: Downing Street rejected Trump’s claim that Europe had failed to act, citing Britain’s role on sanctions and support for the peace process.

Trump previously alleged, without evidence, that Zelensky was the main obstacle to peace. He claimed Ukrainian negotiators “loved” the US-backed proposal and alleged Zelensky had not yet read it. Ukraine’s president has been pressing European and NATO leaders to prevent a deal that Kyiv fears would leave it exposed to future attacks.

Critique of Allies and National Security Strategy

Trump claimed that ideological divisions now threaten to fracture Washington’s alliances. When asked if leaders he viewed as weak could still be allies, he replied: “It depends,” adding, “I think they’re weak, but I also think that they want to be so politically correct”.

His criticism came shortly after European leaders met in London to discuss joint efforts to stop the fighting. When questioned on Europe’s contribution, the US president stated: “They talk but they don’t produce. And the war just keeps going on and on”.

The President’s remarks followed his administration’s new National Security Strategy.

• Strategy Content: The document warned of Europe’s potential “civilizational erasure” and questioned the reliability of some nations as allies. Russia welcomed the strategy as “largely consistent” with Moscow’s vision.
• German Reaction: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz responded to the strategy, calling parts of it unacceptable from a European perspective. He rejected the idea that the US needed to “save democracy” in Europe, stating that Europeans could address such questions themselves.
