MODI

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a rallying cry for nations of the Global South. Specifically, he urged them to unite and assert their influence on the world stage.

Modi spoke to members of parliament in Ethiopia on Wednesday. During his speech, he emphasized the necessity of self-reliance and mutual support among developing nations. The address took place during the second leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour.

“Solidarity is Strength”

Addressing the lawmakers, Modi highlighted the deep historical bonds between India and Ethiopia. He noted that both are ancient civilizations.

“Solidarity is strength, and cooperation is power. Today, as nations of the Global South and as ancient civilisations, as friends, India and Ethiopia are standing together,” Modi stated.

A Symbol of Resistance

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister visited the Adwa Victory Monument. This site commemorates Ethiopia’s decisive 19th-century victory over Italian invaders. Consequently, Modi used this historical event as a metaphor for resilience in the modern era.

“This monument is a timeless reminder of how Ethiopia’s victory inspired the entire colonised world in the quest for dignity and freedom,” Modi observed.

Furthermore, he noted the current climate of global conflict and uncertainty. In this context, he said the monument proves that “the people of the Global South can stand up for themselves.”

Strategic and Economic Ties

Beyond the call for unity, the visit underscores the robust bilateral relationship between the two nations. This applies particularly to the sectors of trade and defence.

Analysts view Ethiopia’s strategic location as a key asset. Additionally, its increasing economic stability offers a potential gateway for India. Therefore, New Delhi hopes to expand its commercial footprint across the African continent through this partnership.

The Broader Tour

Modi’s four-day diplomatic mission focuses heavily on energy security and strategic partnerships. Aside from Ethiopia, the tour includes visits to Jordan and Oman.

Both nations are significant energy producers. Consequently, they are crucial for meeting India’s rapidly growing fuel demands.
