Authorities confirmed on Thursday that the primary suspect in the Brown University mass shooting has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators also linked the gunman to the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor two days later.
The suspect was identified as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a Portuguese national and lawful permanent resident of the United States living in Miami. Officials discovered his body Thursday night inside a storage rental facility in Salem, New Hampshire.
A Trail of Violence Across New England
The violent spree began on December 13, 2025, at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. According to police affidavits, Valente entered an engineering and physics building and fired at least 44 rounds from a 9 mm pistol. The attack killed two students and injured nine others.
Following the campus shooting, Valente allegedly traveled to Brookline, Massachusetts. There, officials say he fatally shot Nuno Loureiro, 47, an MIT professor, inside his home. Loureiro and Valente were former classmates in Portugal between 1995 and 2000. Additionally, Valente had attended Brown as a Ph.D. physics student over two decades ago.
Despite these academic connections, the motive remains a mystery. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha noted that investigators still do not know why Valente targeted these specific locations or students.
How Investigators Cracked the Case
The breakthrough in the five-day manhunt came from a witness at Brown University. A man reported seeing Valente in a campus bathroom hours before the shooting. Finding the suspect’s behavior suspicious, the witness followed him to a rental car and recorded the license plate.
Key Investigation Details:
- Rental Car: Police traced the plate to an agency where security footage showed Valente’s face and clothing matching the shooter.
- Digital Footprint: Investigators used IP addresses and phone data to place Valente near Professor Loureiro’s home on the day of the second murder.
- Evasion Tactics: Valente used a “burner” phone, avoided personal credit cards, and swapped license plates on his rental car to hide his tracks.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez stated that investigators believe Valente acted alone. Two firearms, including the 9 mm pistol used in the attacks, were found near his body in the New Hampshire storage unit.
Political Response and Immigration Policy
The Trump administration quickly responded to the tragedy by targeting immigration programs. Since Valente was a permanent resident who entered via the Diversity Immigrant Visa program, officials announced immediate policy changes.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced a pause on the green-card lottery system. She stated the move follows a directive from President Donald Trump to prevent similar incidents. Noem described the program as “disastrous” and argued that the suspect should never have been allowed in the country.
