A group of at least 17 South African men is currently trapped on the front lines of the war in Ukraine. According to reports, these men were lured to Russia under the pretense of receiving elite security training. However, their families now state that their loved ones were forced into combat against their will.
The crisis began in July 2025 when the recruits, aged 20 to 39, traveled to Russia. Initially, they believed they were signing up for high-paying VIP bodyguard roles. Instead, they were sent to the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine to serve as frontline soldiers for the Russian military.
Allegations of Deception and Abuse
The South African government received the first distress calls from the trapped men on November 6. According to the recruits, they were presented with contracts written entirely in Russian. Because there was no translation available, they were reportedly pressured into signing by individuals who assured them the documents were for civilian security training.
Consequently, families have reported harrowing conditions on the ground:
- Starvation: Recruits have spent up to a week without food or water.
- Extreme Labor: Men are forced to dig trenches in freezing temperatures for hours on end.
- Safety Risks: Photos sent from the front lines show emaciated men hiding in basements to avoid drone strikes.
High-Level Investigation and Political Resignation
In response, the Hawks, South Africa’s elite police unit, launched a “crime against the state” investigation. Under national law, it is illegal for South Africans to provide unauthorized military assistance to foreign nations or mercenary groups.
Recent developments in the probe include:
- Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla: The daughter of former President Jacob Zuma resigned as a lawmaker after her name was linked to the recruitment process.
- Denials of Guilt: Zuma-Sambudla has denied the allegations. Her legal team claims she was also a “victim of deception.”
- Diplomatic Efforts: President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office confirmed that authorities are in “sensitive discussions” with both Russia and Ukraine to secure the men’s release.
A Continental Recruitment Crisis
Furthermore, this incident appears to be part of a larger trend across the continent. Kenya recently reported that over 200 of its citizens are fighting for Russia. Similarly, authorities in Botswana have identified cases involving similar job scams.
The Ukrainian government estimates that over 1,400 African citizens from 36 different countries are currently fighting alongside Russian forces.
As the investigation continues, South African families are urging the government to act swiftly. They hope to save their sons before more lives are lost in a conflict they never intended to join.
