In a major move to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, Meta announced on Monday, December 29, 2025, that it will acquire Manus, a Singapore-based AI startup.

This acquisition highlights Meta’s commitment to integrating autonomous AI agents across its global platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram.

While official financial details remain undisclosed, industry sources suggest the transaction values Manus at between $2 billion and $3 billion. This represents a massive leap for the startup, which was valued at roughly $500 million during a funding round earlier this year.

What is Manus? The Rise of the “General AI Agent”

Manus gained international attention early in 2025 for developing what it describes as the world’s first general AI agent. Unlike traditional chatbots that require constant user input, the Manus agent is designed to:

  • Make autonomous decisions to complete complex workflows.
  • Execute tasks with significantly less prompting than competitors like ChatGPT.
  • Outperform specialized tools, with the company claiming superior results over OpenAI’s DeepResearch.

Originally founded in China, Manus recently relocated its headquarters to Singapore. This move was part of a broader trend of tech firms seeking to navigate the rising geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China.

Strategic Integration: The “Agentic” Vision

Meta plans to weave Manus’s technology into its existing ecosystem. Analysts believe the startup’s tech is a perfect fit for WhatsApp’s small and medium business (SMB) tools, as well as CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s long-term goal of providing every user with a highly capable personal AI assistant.

“We see a natural fit into Meta’s fast-growing WhatsApp SMB footprint,” noted Barton Crockett, an analyst at Rosenblatt Securities. He added that the deal aligns with Zuckerberg’s “agentic-rich vision” for the future of the company.

A Competitive Market for AI Talent

This acquisition is the latest in a series of aggressive investments by Meta. Earlier this year, the company invested in Scale AI—a deal that valued the data-labeling firm at $29 billion.

Manus brings with it a pedigree of high-profile backers. Before the acquisition, the startup was supported by:

  • Benchmark (which led a $75 million funding round).
  • HSG (formerly Sequoia Capital China).
  • Tencent Holdings and ZhenFund.
  • A strategic partnership with Alibaba.

By bringing Manus under its wing, Meta is positioning itself to lead the next phase of AI—moving beyond simple conversation and into autonomous task execution.
