Pope Leo XIV Pleads for Rule of Law Amid Venezuela Crisis

POPE

On Sunday, January 4, 2026, Pope Leo XIV expressed profound concern regarding the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela. During his traditional Angelus blessing at the Vatican, the pontiff emphasized a critical point. He stated that the welfare of the Venezuelan people must remain the primary focus of the international community.

The Pope’s appeal comes at a critical global moment. It follows the detention of Nicolás Maduro during a high-profile U.S. raid. As the region enters a period of intense uncertainty, the Vatican has positioned itself as a voice for restraint and constitutional order.

A Plea for Justice and the Rule of Law

Addressing a crowd in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV called for an immediate cessation of violence. He stressed that the current situation should be a catalyst for justice and peace. He warned that the transition should not become a trigger for further instability or civil unrest.

“With a heart full of concern, I am following the developments of the situation in Venezuela,” the Pope stated. “The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over every other consideration.”

The Pope outlined several priorities for the nation’s recovery:

  • Safeguarding Sovereignty: Respecting the fundamental right of Venezuela to manage its own internal affairs.
  • Constitutional Integrity: Ensuring the rule of law is maintained as defined by the nation’s constitution.
  • Human and Civil Rights: Protecting the dignity and rights of every individual, regardless of political affiliation.

Advocacy for Diplomacy Over Force

This latest statement reinforces Pope Leo XIV’s consistent stance on Latin American diplomacy. Since his election in May 2025, he has frequently urged global leaders specifically those in the United States to favor dialogue. He believes diplomatic pressure is superior to military intervention.

While the Pope has previously acknowledged the role of economic measures in seeking political change, he issued a new warning today. He noted that military force carries a high risk of harming the most vulnerable populations. He believes a lasting solution must be built on “paths of justice” rather than “further instability.”

Protecting the Vulnerable Amid Uncertainty

The Vatican’s message focused heavily on the protection of civilians during this high-stakes political transition. As world leaders debate the legality and consequences of the U.S. operation, Pope Leo XIV reminded the faithful of a core principle. He argued that true peace is only possible when human rights are placed above political strategy.

The Pope concluded his address by inviting the global Catholic community to pray for the “beloved Venezuelan people.” He asked for a future defined by collaboration and social harmony.
