Tunisia Sacks Coach Sami Trabelsi Following AFCON Exit

TUNISIA

The Tunisian Football Federation has officially dismissed head coach Sami Trabelsi. The decision follows the national team’s failure to advance past the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team’s journey ended on Saturday, January 3, 2026, after a penalty shootout loss to Mali. The defeat sparked significant frustration, as Tunisia was unable to secure a win despite Mali playing with only ten men for a portion of the match.

A Struggling Campaign in Morocco

Tunisia’s performance during the tournament was largely inconsistent. Although they reached the knockout phase, their results in the group stage left fans and officials concerned:

  • Group C Finish: Second place.
  • Performance: One win, one draw, and one loss.

The Round of 16 exit was met with mounting public anger. Critics pointed to a lack of tactical flexibility as the primary reason for the team’s inability to overcome their opponents.

Legacy of a Football Icon

Sami Trabelsi’s departure marks the end of a short coaching tenure for one of the country’s most respected football figures.

A Look at Trabelsi’s Career:

  • National Hero: He made 81 appearances and earned 52 caps for Tunisia between 1991 and 2001.
  • World Cup Captain: He famously led the squad during the 1998 World Cup.
  • Coaching Run: He was appointed head coach in February 2025.

Despite his status as a legendary former captain, his time on the sidelines lasted less than a year. The federation is expected to announce a transitional plan soon to prepare for the next round of international qualifiers.
