Algeria

Algeria has officially advanced to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. The high-stakes match, held in Rabat on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, remained undecided until the final moments of extra time.

A Last-Minute Decider

For nearly two hours, neither side could break the deadlock. However, in the 119th minute, Algerian winger Adil Boulbina finally found the back of the net. This clinical finish sparked massive celebrations among the “Fennec Foxes” fans. Consequently, the goal ended Congo’s tournament run just as the match appeared to be heading for a penalty shootout.

Match Highlights and Performance

While the DR Congo “Leopards” entered the game with significant momentum and a disciplined defense, Algeria ultimately controlled the pace. The Algerian squad maintained high possession throughout the game. As a result, they kept the Congolese defense under constant pressure during both the second half and the intense extra-time period.

The “Statue” of Support

One of the most remarkable moments of the match occurred off the pitch. Famous Congolese supporter Michel Nkuka Mboladinga demonstrated incredible endurance as a tribute to his nation. He stood motionless on a pedestal during the first half, mimicking the statue of independence hero Patrice Lumumba.

Although he remained stoic during the game, Mboladinga was seen in tears at the final whistle as his team’s AFCON journey reached an emotional conclusion.

What’s Next for the Teams?

The tournament landscape is now set for the next round. Here is what lies ahead:

  • Algeria: The team now prepares for a heavyweight quarterfinal clash against Nigeria this Saturday in Marrakech. The “Super Eagles” enter the round following a dominant 4-0 win over Mozambique.
  • DR Congo: The Leopards will shift their focus to the World Cup Playoffs in March. They are scheduled to face either New Caledonia or Jamaica as they battle for a spot on the global stage.
