Akinnaanu

The gospel music community in Nigeria is in mourning as it bids farewell to a voice that defined a generation of worship. On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, news broke that the iconic singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known by her stage name Omije Ojumi, passed away in a Lagos hospital.

Her transition marks the end of an era for many who grew up with her soul-stirring melodies echoing through their homes and sanctuary walls.

A Soundtrack to Sunday Mornings

For many Nigerians raised in the late 90s and early 2000s, Bunmi Akinnaanu’s voice was more than just music; it was a spiritual companion. Growing up, you didn’t just “listen” to her breakout hit, Omije Ojumi—you felt it.

The song was a mandatory staple in churches across the nation. Whether it was a solemn morning devotion at home or a high-spirit church service, the emotional depth of her lyrics brought many to tears and closer to their faith. Indeed, her music had a unique way of capturing the essence of human struggle and divine hope, making her a household name in Christian circles.

From the Bank to the Altar: Her Musical Journey

Akinnaanu’s path to stardom was a testament to following a divine calling. Before she became a full-time evangelist and singer, she held a steady career in the banking sector. However, the pull of her ministry was too strong to ignore. She eventually resigned from her corporate role to dedicate her life to gospel music.

This leap of faith paid off. Following the success of Omije Ojumi, she released several other impactful tracks, including the popular O Ti Sure. Her transition from the boardroom to the pulpit showed her fans that it is never too late to pursue one’s true purpose.

The Final Chapter: A Battle with Health

While the official cause of her death has not been disclosed, many remember the singer’s recent public struggle with her health. In late 2025, a poignant video from a service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan surfaced online. It showed the singer seated with her leg propped up while a cleric offered prayers.

During that service, the pastor mentioned a persistent and severe leg complication, which he described as a spiritual challenge. Despite her pain, Akinnaanu remained steadfast in her faith, publicly seeking prayers from her global audience. She passed away on January 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and devotion.

Tributes Pour In

The news of her passing was confirmed via Instagram by her colleague, Ayo Melody, on behalf of the Akinnaanu family. The statement, signed by Olawale Akinnaanu, expressed deep sadness but also gratitude for the life she lived.

“With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye… May God grant her eternal rest.”

As the news spreads, thousands of fans have taken to social media to share how her songs helped them through their darkest hours. For a generation that grew up on her “tears of joy” (the literal translation of Omije Oju Mi), her music will remain an immortal part of the Nigerian gospel heritage.
