South Africa national cricket team delivered a dominant performance to defeat India national cricket team by 76 runs in their opening Super Eight match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Chasing a challenging target of 188 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, India were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs, marking their first loss of the tournament and ending a 12-match winning streak stretching back to their 2024 title run.

South Africa’s bowlers dismantled India’s batting lineup early, with captain Aiden Markram striking first by dismissing in-form opener Ishan Kishan in the opening over. Wickets continued to fall as Marco Jansen removed Tilak Varma, leaving India struggling to build momentum.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Abhishek Sharma attempted a recovery, but regular breakthroughs ensured India never settled. A brief 35-run partnership between Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube offered hope before Dube’s dismissal for 42 effectively sealed the outcome.

Jansen starred with the ball, taking four wickets for 22 runs, while Keshav Maharaj claimed three for 24. Lungi Ngidi also impressed with a tight spell, conceding just 15 runs in four overs.

Earlier, South Africa recovered from a shaky start of 20-3, thanks to a match-winning innings from David Miller, who scored 63 off 35 balls. He combined with Dewald Brevis (45 off 29) for a crucial 97-run partnership that revived the innings.

Late fireworks from Tristan Stubbs, who smashed an unbeaten 44 off 24 balls, powered South Africa to a formidable 187-7. India’s standout bowler Jasprit Bumrah returned figures of 3-15.

The victory sends South Africa to the top of Group 1, while India slump to the bottom with a net run rate of -3.80. The defending champions must now win their remaining matches against Zimbabwe national cricket team and West Indies cricket team to keep their semifinal hopes alive.

South Africa will next face the West Indies, while India take on Zimbabwe in crucial upcoming fixtures.
