Team Hubes Dance Crew emerge winners of Ghana DanceSport League

Team Hubes Dance Crew claimed victory at the inaugural Ghana DanceSport League on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Their impressive performance triumphed over competitors, including United Kings Academy, 4Bent Dance Crew, Asa Academy, Flames Dance Company, and BAS Academy.

The event took place during the Street Dance Fiesta, part of the 10th Ghana Dance Festival, hosted at Alliance Francaise. The DanceSport League featured a presentation style format, requiring crews to showcase their unique routines in all rounds. Initially, all six crews performed, with the top four advancing based on creativity, teamwork, execution, and showmanship.

In the semifinals, Team Hubes faced off against 4Bent Dance Crew and secured their spot in the finals. Meanwhile, United Kings Academy defeated Asa Dance Crew to join them. The third-place contest saw 4Bent Dance Crew take the podium after Asa Academy did not show up.

The final match featured Team Hubes against United Kings Academy, with Team Hubes emerging victorious to the excitement of judges and the enthusiastic audience. Representing Korle Gonno in Accra, Team Hubes took home 4,000 cedis for their first-place finish, while United Kings Academy from Abesim in Sunyani received 2,000 cedis for second place, and 4Bent Dance Crew from Dansoman won 1,000 cedis for third. All top three teams were awarded medals for their participation.

Judging the competition were notable figures including Adjetey Sowah, the 1986 World Dance Champion; Dr. Terry Bright Ofosu, a dance lecturer at the University of Ghana and the 1989 National Dance Champion; and Yvonne “Laladzy” Okyere, CEO of Flawless Dance Studio. The event was hosted by iconic dancer Mickie Flex.

Robert Klah, founder of the Ghana DanceSport League, remarked, “Dance is a sport. With its inclusion in the Olympics, this fact has been reinforced. The establishment of DanceSport Ghana aims to promote dance as a competitive sport, and we’re excited to launch the Ghana DanceSport League, providing a platform for dance athletes to develop their careers annually.”

Klah also announced plans for the Ghana DanceSport School League, targeting the amateur dance community, and emphasized their commitment to fostering international opportunities for Ghanaian dance athletes.

The inaugural Ghana DanceSport League was a key feature of the Street Dance Fiesta, which also included a workshop led by the DWP Academy and performances from a variety of talented dance crews, showcasing the vibrant street dance scene in Ghana.
