Located on rolling green hills, east of Kigali, this $23 million project is the first utility-scale, grid-connected, commercial solar field in East Africa. The field is 8.5 MW, and it increased Rwanda’s generation capacity by 6%. Location: Rwanda Photographer: USAID / Power Africa /Sameer Halai

Côte d’Ivoire is at the forefront of West Africa’s energy transition, with solar energy emerging as a key player in diversifying the country’s energy mix. Although the nation has traditionally relied on hydropower and natural gas, solar power is quickly gaining ground as an affordable and sustainable alternative.

Investment in Renewable Energy

To meet rising energy demands, the government has introduced policies encouraging private sector investments in renewables. Projects like the Boundiali Solar Plant, which has a capacity of 37.5 MW, illustrate the potential of solar power to supply rural areas. Foreign investors from countries like France, Germany, and China are also pouring resources into renewable projects across Côte d’Ivoire.

Electrification of Rural Areas

Rural electrification is one of the government’s top priorities. Programs under the “Electricity for All” initiative aim to connect remote villages to solar mini-grids. Solar companies, such as Zola Electric, offer pay-as-you-go solutions, providing affordable access to electricity.

Conclusion

Solar energy is not just helping Côte d’Ivoire reduce its carbon footprint but also transforming lives by electrifying rural areas. With ongoing investments and policy support, the country is well-positioned to become a regional leader in renewable energy.
